Quick Answer

What is a magnetostrictive position sensor? A magnetostrictive position sensor is a non-contact absolute linear position transducer based on the Wiedemann effect. A current pulse travels along a magnetostrictive waveguide; a position magnet on the moving part creates a torsional strain wave at the exact point of contact. The travel time of this wave determines absolute position to 0.001mm resolution — with no zeroing required at power-up. SEGMENsensor manufactures magnetostrictive sensors in Shenzhen, China, covering 25mm to 8000mm stroke, with SSI, 4-20mA, CANopen, and RS485 outputs.

How Magnetostrictive Position Sensors Work

Magnetostrictive sensing (Wiedemann effect) delivers absolute position measurement with micron-level resolution and no moving contacts — theoretically unlimited service life.

01

Current Pulse Along Waveguide

A short electrical current pulse travels along the magnetostrictive waveguide wire at the speed of light, generating a circumferential magnetic field around the wire.

02

Position Magnet Creates Torsional Strain

The permanent magnet on the moving part (the position float) interacts with the circumferential field at its exact location, inducing a torsional (twisting) mechanical strain in the waveguide at that single point.

03

Strain Wave Travels to Detection End

The torsional strain wave propagates along the waveguide at the speed of sound. A magnetostrictive pickup at the end detects the wave's arrival time.

04

Time → Absolute Position

The time interval between the current pulse and the strain wave arrival is converted to absolute position by the internal ASIC. The result is output as SSI, 4-20mA, CANopen, or RS485 — absolute, not incremental.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions — Magnetostrictive Position Sensors

Common questions from OEM engineers. Email info@segmensensor.com for application-specific advice within 24 hours.

How does a magnetostrictive position sensor work?
A current pulse travels along a magnetostrictive waveguide wire. A permanent magnet on the moving part creates a torsional strain wave at the exact point of interaction. The time between the current pulse and the detection of this strain wave is proportional to the magnet's position. This gives absolute position — the sensor knows where it is immediately at power-up, no homing required.
What stroke ranges are available?
25mm to 8000mm in a single rod. Custom stroke values are available for OEM orders with MOQ 50 pcs. For applications requiring stroke beyond 8000mm, multi-rod or custom configurations can be quoted on request.
What is the accuracy and resolution?
Resolution: 0.001mm (1 micron) for rod-type and hydraulic built-in models. Accuracy: ±0.05mm FS standard, ±0.01mm FS for high-accuracy variants. Repeatability: ±0.001mm. All specifications apply over the full operating temperature range -40°C to +85°C.
What output signals are available?
SSI Gray Code (24-bit), CANopen DS406, Start/Stop pulse, 4-20mA, 0-10V, and RS485/Modbus RTU. SSI and CANopen are compatible with most servo drives and motion controllers. Specify your output when requesting a quote.
Can magnetostrictive sensors be built into hydraulic cylinders?
Yes. Our hydraulic built-in series is rated to 350 bar (50 MPa). The sensor rod is installed in the cylinder bore via the end cap; the position magnet mounts on the piston. This is standard for mobile cranes, excavators, press machines, and injection moulding equipment.
What is the difference between magnetostrictive and LVDT displacement sensors?
Magnetostrictive is best for long strokes (25mm–8000mm), absolute position without re-homing, and in-cylinder hydraulic applications up to 350 bar. LVDT is best for very short strokes (±0.5mm–±100mm) and vibration-rich environments. SEGMENsensor manufactures both — see our LVDT displacement sensor page for short-stroke applications.
How does the cost compare to premium imported magnetostrictive brands?
SEGMENsensor factory-direct pricing is typically 30%–50% lower than premium imported brands, with equivalent specifications (±0.05mm accuracy, SSI output, IP67, -40°C to +85°C). ISO 9001 certified, CE compliant, 3–5 week DDP lead time. Sample units available with no MOQ for evaluation.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Samples: 1–5 pcs, no minimum. OEM production MOQ: 10 pcs standard, 50 pcs custom stroke. Lead time: 3–5 weeks from order confirmation. DDP delivery to USA, EU, Australia, and Southeast Asia available. NDA on request.
