What is a Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter?

A magnetostrictive level transmitter (also called a magnetic float level transmitter or magnetostrictive liquid level gauge) is a continuous level sensor built around a magnetostrictive waveguide probe and a buoyant magnetic float. As the float rides the liquid surface, the transmitter measures the float's absolute position by time-of-flight and outputs a 4-20mA, RS485/Modbus, SSI or HART signal proportional to level. Unlike a hydrostatic probe, its reading does not depend on liquid density, and unlike a float switch it measures the full range continuously — with optional oil-water interface and multi-point temperature in the same instrument.

How to Select a Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter — 3 Configuration Paths

Match your measurement task — single level, interface, or level-plus-temperature — to the right SEGMENsensor configuration.

📏
Continuous Level Only
Most common configuration
  • Single magnetic float, absolute measurement
  • Measuring length 100–3000 mm (longer on request)
  • Output: 4-20mA loop-powered or RS485/Modbus
  • 316L SS probe, IP67/IP68
  • Best for fuel, chemical, water and reservoir tanks
→ Single-float level version
🛢️
Oil-Water Interface
Two-phase media
  • Dual floats — total level + interface level
  • Specify both media densities at order (float buoyancy)
  • Output: RS485/Modbus or two 4-20mA loops
  • For separators, tank farms, produced water
  • ATEX/IECEx option for hazardous areas
→ Dual-float interface version
🌡️
Level + Temperature
Volume correction & profiling
  • Multi-point temperature elements along the probe
  • Average temperature or stratification profile, 0.1°C
  • Level + temperature over one RS485/Modbus cable
  • For inventory volume correction & thermal media
  • Reduces tank penetrations and wiring
→ Level-and-temperature version

FAQ

Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter — Frequently Asked Questions

Technical answers for engineers specifying magnetostrictive level, interface, and temperature measurement for fuel, chemical, energy-storage, and process tanks.

How does a magnetostrictive level transmitter work?
A magnetostrictive level transmitter uses a rigid (or flexible) probe containing a magnetostrictive waveguide and a magnetic float that rides on the liquid surface. A current pulse sent down the waveguide interacts with the float's magnetic field (Wiedemann effect), generating a torsional strain pulse at the exact float position. The transit time of this pulse is converted to an absolute level reading. Because position is derived from a physical time-of-flight measurement, the output is absolute — no re-zeroing is needed after power loss, and resolution reaches 0.01 mm.
What is the difference between a magnetostrictive level transmitter and a float switch?
A float switch is a point-level device — it only tells you whether the liquid is above or below one fixed point. A magnetostrictive level transmitter provides continuous, absolute level measurement along the full probe length with a 4-20mA / RS485 / SSI output, plus optional interface (two-float) and temperature measurement. For high-accuracy tank gauging, inventory management, and custody-style measurement, magnetostrictive is the preferred technology; for simple high/low alarms, a float switch is more economical.
Can a magnetostrictive level transmitter measure the oil-water interface?
Yes. A dual-float configuration places one float at the total liquid surface and a second, differently weighted float at the oil-water interface. The transmitter reports both the overall product level and the interface level simultaneously — essential for separators, tank farms, and produced-water systems. SEGMENsensor interface versions output both values over RS485/Modbus or two independent 4-20mA loops. Specify the two media densities at order so we can select the correct float buoyancy.
What measuring length and accuracy are available?
Standard rigid-probe measuring lengths run from 100 mm up to 3000 mm, with longer multi-section and flexible-probe versions available for tall tanks on request. Linearity is ±0.05% FS (typical), with 0.01 mm digital resolution and high repeatability. Because the measurement is absolute and non-contact between waveguide and float, there is no drift or wear over the service life. Confirm your exact tank height and mounting so we can size the probe and inactive zones correctly.
Does it measure temperature as well as level?
Yes — multi-point temperature measurement is an available option. Digital temperature elements distributed along the probe report average tank temperature or a temperature profile (stratification) to 0.1°C, which is used for volume correction and for monitoring stored fluids such as fuel, transformer oil, and thermal-storage / energy-storage media. Level, interface, and temperature are all delivered over a single RS485/Modbus link, reducing wiring and tank penetrations.
What output signals and protocols are supported?
Outputs include 4-20mA (2-wire), 0-10V, RS485/Modbus RTU, SSI, and HART (optional). RS485/Modbus is recommended when you need level + interface + multi-point temperature over one cable. 4-20mA suits direct connection to PLC/DCS analog inputs and CDU / tank controllers. Specify the output at order; SEGMENsensor can also match a competitor's telegram/register map for drop-in replacement of imported magnetostrictive transmitters.
Is it suitable for hazardous-area fuel and chemical tanks?
Magnetostrictive level transmitters are widely used on fuel, solvent, and chemical storage tanks. Explosion-protected versions are available on request: Ex ia intrinsically safe (EPL Ga) for Zone 0, 1 and 2, or Ex d flameproof (EPL Gb) for Zone 1 and 2, in line with IEC 60079-14 and ATEX 2014/34/EU. Confirm the required gas group and temperature class when you enquire — the ATEX / IECEx certificate for the specified model is issued on request. Wetted parts are 316/316L stainless steel as standard, with PTFE/PP float options for aggressive media. IP67/IP68 protection covers outdoor and washdown environments.
What is the MOQ, lead time, and can you supply OEM / private-label units?
MOQ is 10 pcs (1–2 samples accepted for evaluation). Standard lead time is 3–5 weeks depending on probe length and options. SEGMENsensor is a factory-direct OEM manufacturer in Shenzhen (registration 91440300MAEUXXQU04) and supplies private-label housings, custom flanges/threads, custom register maps, and OEM datasheets. CE and RoHS documentation is provided with each order; calibration and material certificates are available on request.
