SEGMENsensor is an ISO 9001:2015 manufacturer of magnetostrictive linear position sensors in Shenzhen, China. Strokes run from 25 to 8000 mm in rod, hydraulic in-cylinder (350 bar) and liquid-level configurations, with SSI, 4-20 mA, 0-10 V, RS485 or CANopen output. OEM orders start at 10 pieces; samples ship in 5–7 days.
Purchasing engineers searching for a magnetostrictive linear position sensor manufacturer usually need three things confirmed before a request for quotation is worth sending: that the supplier actually builds the sensor rather than resells it, that the stroke, output and pressure rating match the machine, and that the commercial terms fit a pilot run. This page answers all three for SEGMENsensor. For the physics, see how a magnetostrictive position sensor works; for delivery detail, see lead time, MOQ and OEM pricing terms.
What SEGMENsensor Manufactures
Segmen Industrial Development Co., Ltd. was founded in Shenzhen in 2019. Its engineering team brings more than 20 years of sensor experience, and the company now supplies more than 200 OEM customers in over 30 countries. Magnetostrictive sensing is one of six product lines; the others are liquid level, pressure, LVDT, inductive proximity and ultrasonic flow. Within magnetostrictive sensing, three configurations are manufactured on the same production line and to the same calibration procedure.
| Configuration | Stroke | Typical use | Product page |
|---|---|---|---|
| R-Series external rod / profile | 50–2500 mm standard, up to 4000 mm | Machine axes, presses, test benches, gantries, lifting platforms | Magnetostrictive position sensors |
| Hydraulic cylinder built-in | 50–4000 mm | Inside the cylinder bore at up to 350 bar; mobile hydraulics, injection moulding, press lines | Magnetostrictive position sensors |
| Magnetostrictive liquid level | 200–8000 mm | Continuous level and interface in process and storage tanks; ATEX/IECEx variants | Magnetostrictive level transmitters |
All three use the same measuring principle: a current pulse along a waveguide, a torsional strain wave returned from the position magnet, and a time-of-flight measurement converted to an absolute position. There is no mechanical contact between magnet and waveguide, so there is no wear element to replace over the machine's life.

The datasheet lists stroke ranges, linearity and resolution, output options, supply voltage, IP rating, housing materials, connector pin-out and the ordering code for all three magnetostrictive configurations. No registration required.
Output Signals and Controller Integration
Because the measurement is absolute, every output reports the true magnet position immediately after power-up; no reference run is needed. Choose the interface by the controller you already have.
| Output | Connects to | When to specify it |
|---|---|---|
| SSI Gray code | Servo drives, motion controllers, SSI input cards | Closed-loop axis control where the controller clocks the sensor synchronously. |
| 4-20 mA | PLC analog input modules | Long cable runs, existing analog channels, retrofit of potentiometer feedback. |
| 0-10 V | PLC or controller voltage inputs | Short cable runs inside a machine frame or test rig. |
| RS485 Modbus RTU | Bus-connected PLCs, HMIs, data loggers | Several sensors on one bus, readable diagnostics. |
| CANopen | CAN-bus machine networks, mobile hydraulics | In-cylinder sensors on mobile machinery and press lines. |
| Start/Stop pulse | PLC pulse-interface cards, custom electronics | Time-interval measurement handled by the controller itself. |

Where OEMs Use SEGMENsensor Magnetostrictive Sensors
Hydraulic cylinders and presses. The built-in version sits inside the cylinder bore, rated to 350 bar, with the position magnet on the piston and the connector exiting through the end cap. Cylinder builders typically qualify one bore size with 1–5 samples, confirm the SSI or CANopen interface with their controller, and then release production against a blanket order.
Injection moulding, metallurgy and heavy machinery. Long-stroke rod sensors up to 4000 mm replace potentiometers on clamp units, ladle carriers, roll-gap adjusters and lifting platforms where a wear-free absolute signal across −40 °C to +85 °C is required.
Test benches and gantry axes. Short-stroke rod and profile sensors with 0-10 V, 4-20 mA or SSI output give cycle-by-cycle repeatability of ±0.001 mm on hydraulic test rigs, semiconductor handling stages and automation modules.
Process and storage tanks. The liquid level series measures 200–8000 mm with dual floats for level and interface, in 316L or PFA-coated housings. Equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres in the EU falls under Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) ↗; state the required equipment group and category in the enquiry so the Ex ia or Ex d variant and its documentation are quoted correctly.
How to Qualify a Magnetostrictive Sensor Manufacturer
A datasheet alone does not tell you whether a supplier can hold specification over a production run. The checklist below is the one SEGMENsensor expects its own OEM customers to apply, and each point is answered for SEGMENsensor.
| Check | Why it matters | SEGMENsensor |
|---|---|---|
| Quality management system | Controls incoming material, calibration and traceability across batches. | Factory certified to ISO 9001:2015; each production unit ships with a calibration record. |
| Enclosure protection declared to IEC 60529 | IP67 and IP68 only mean something when tested to the same code you specify. | IP67 (rod, level) and IP68 (in-cylinder) declared per IEC 60529 — Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) ↗. |
| Traceable units of measure | Resolution and linearity figures must be stated in SI units so they can be compared and verified on your own gauge. | All figures stated in millimetres and percent of full scale, following the SI unit conventions published by NIST ↗. |
| Hazardous-area capability | Tank-farm and petrochemical projects need certified Ex variants, not adapted standard units. | ATEX/IECEx Ex ia (Zone 0/1/2) and Ex d (Zone 1/2) variants on the liquid level series. |
| Sample policy | A fit check on your cylinder or frame before committing to volume. | 1–5 sample pieces, shipped in 5–7 days, built on the production line. |
| Engineering response | Stroke, output and mounting questions must be answered before the drawing is frozen. | Written reply within 24 hours on working days; application engineers available Mon–Fri. |
