Lead Time: Samples, Production and What Extends It

Lead time counts from written order confirmation and approved drawings, not from the first enquiry. Sending the stroke, output signal, mounting type and target quantity with the first message usually removes one full round of clarification and keeps a project inside the 3–5 week window.
MOQ and Sample Policy
The production MOQ is 10 pieces per configuration. Below that, orders are handled as samples: 1–5 pieces, intended for first-article approval, fit checks on a cylinder or machine frame, and signal-integration tests with your PLC or controller. Sample units are built on the same line and to the same calibration procedure as production units, so a validated sample carries over directly to the series order.
What Determines the Price
SEGMENsensor does not publish list prices because a magnetostrictive sensor is configured, not picked from a shelf. Six variables drive the quotation, in roughly this order of influence:

Where the Lead Time Matters Most: Typical OEM Applications
Hydraulic cylinders and presses. The built-in version sits inside the cylinder bore at up to 350 bar and reports piston position with 0.001 mm resolution. Cylinder builders typically order samples for one cylinder size, validate the SSI or CANopen interface, then move to a blanket order released against production.
Injection moulding, metallurgy and steel-mill equipment. Long-stroke rod sensors (up to 4000 mm) replace potentiometers on clamp units, ladle carriers and roll-gap adjustment where wear-free, non-contact measurement across −40 °C to +85 °C is required.
Energy storage and process tanks. The liquid level series measures 200–8000 mm with dual floats for level and interface, in 316L or PFA-coated housings, with ATEX variants for petrochemical tank farms. Equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres in the EU falls under Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) ↗; specify the required equipment group and category on the enquiry so the correct variant and documentation are quoted.
Semiconductor and automation modules. Short-stroke rod sensors with 0-10 V or 4-20 mA output are used on gantry and lift axes where an absolute signal without homing is preferred.
