How does a magnetostrictive position sensor work inside a hydraulic cylinder?
The sensor rod sits in a gun-drilled hole in the piston rod and a ring magnet is fitted to the piston. The electronics send a current pulse along the waveguide; where it meets the magnet field a torsional wave returns, and the travel time gives the absolute piston position. Nothing touches, so there is no wear and no homing after power loss.
Magnetostrictive vs LVDT vs potentiometer — which is better for my cylinder?
For strokes from 25 mm up to several metres inside a pressurised cylinder, a magnetostrictive sensor such as SGM-PR10 is usually the best fit: non-contact, absolute and rated 35 MPa continuous. LVDTs suit short strokes up to ±500 mm on test rigs and gauging. Potentiometers are low cost but wear because a wiper slides on a track.
What stroke lengths and outputs are available?
SGM-PR10 and SGM-PE10 cover 25–8000 mm with 4–20 mA, 0–20 mA, 0–10 V, 0–5 V, RS485 or SSI output. SGM-PR20 covers 25–7500 mm with analog or RS485 output. The stroke, output and connection are set in the ordering code on each series page.
