What is a Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter?

A portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter is a handheld, battery-powered instrument that measures liquid flow by clamping ultrasonic transducers onto the outside of a pipe. No pipe cutting, no process shutdown, and no contamination risk. It uses the transit-time method: two ultrasonic pulses travel diagonally through the pipe, one with the flow and one against. The time difference between the two pulses is proportional to the average flow velocity. Multiplied by the pipe cross-sectional area, this gives volumetric flow rate. Ideal for commissioning verification, energy audits, spot-checks, and rental applications.

Installation

How to Install a Portable Clamp-On Flow Meter — 3 Steps

No pipe cutting, no special tools, no process shutdown. From unboxing to live flow reading in under 10 minutes.

01
Input Pipe Parameters
Enter pipe outer diameter, wall thickness, pipe material, and liquid type into the meter. The meter automatically calculates the correct transducer spacing for Z/V/W mounting configuration.
02
Mount the Transducers
Clean the pipe outer surface, apply acoustic coupling gel, and secure the transducers at the meter-calculated spacing. Adjust position to maximize signal strength — target signal quality score above 80.
03
Start Measurement
The meter displays real-time flow velocity, volumetric flow rate, and accumulated total. Connect 4-20mA output to a recorder or read Modbus RTU data via RS485. Log data to internal memory for later export.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical and sourcing questions from OEM buyers about portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters.

How accurate is a portable clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter?
Under ideal conditions (straight pipe run ≥10D upstream and 5D downstream, clean liquid, full pipe, Reynolds number >10,000), accuracy is ±1% of reading. In practice, accuracy of ±2–3% is more typical in field conditions with some pipe turbulence. Accuracy is most affected by: pipe scale or internal coating (reduces ultrasonic signal penetration), non-full pipe flow, highly turbulent flow near pumps or elbows, and entrained gas bubbles. SEGMENsensor's signal quality indicator helps identify installation quality — readings below 60% signal score should be viewed with caution.
What pipe materials can a clamp-on flow meter measure?
Transit-time clamp-on meters work on all pipe materials that transmit ultrasonic signals: carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, fiberglass, and concrete-lined pipes. They cannot measure through pipes with severely corroded internal walls (significant signal scatter), cast iron with graphite flaking, or pipes with heavy external insulation covering the transducer location. For pipes with cement lining, bitumen lining, or rubber lining, use the appropriate transducer coupling method and confirm signal quality before recording measurements.
What liquid types can be measured with a portable clamp-on flow meter?
Transit-time clamp-on meters measure clean liquids or liquids with low solids content (<100 ppm suspended particles). Suitable liquids: water, drinking water, chilled water, cooling water, seawater, ethylene/propylene glycol solutions, diesel fuel, light mineral oil, hydraulic oil, and chemical solutions with no gas entrainment. Not suitable for: slurries (>2% solids), wastewater with high solids, aerated or heavily gaseous liquids, liquids with significant suspended particulates. For wastewater with solids, specify the Doppler mode variant.
What is the minimum and maximum pipe size for a portable clamp-on flow meter?
SEGMENsensor portable clamp-on meters cover DN15 (0.5" OD) to DN6000 (240" OD). For small pipes (DN15–DN50), use 1 MHz high-frequency transducers in Z-mount configuration (transducers on opposite sides of pipe). For medium pipes (DN50–DN300), use 500 kHz transducers in V-mount (both transducers same side). For large pipes (DN300–DN6000), use 200 kHz transducers in W-mount or multi-path configuration. The meter automatically calculates the correct transducer spacing after you input pipe outer diameter, wall thickness, and material.
How long does the battery last and can it run on external power?
The built-in lithium-ion battery provides 12+ hours of continuous operation, sufficient for a full working day of spot measurements. Battery charges fully in 3–4 hours via included AC adaptor (100–240V AC) or 12V DC car adaptor. For extended continuous monitoring installations (e.g., overnight energy audit), connect the included 5V USB power bank or 12V DC external supply — the meter runs indefinitely while charging the internal battery simultaneously. The 4-20mA output also functions during battery operation (sourcing type, requires external 24V loop supply connected to the output terminals).
Can the portable flow meter store and export data?
Yes. Built-in data logger stores up to 2,000 data records, each with timestamp (date/time), flow rate, flow velocity, accumulated total flow, and signal quality score. Logging interval: 1 second to 24 hours (user-configurable). Export: connect USB cable to PC and copy the CSV file from the meter's onboard storage — no software installation required, opens directly in Excel. Optional software (Windows) allows trend graphs, report generation, and multi-meter data merging. For continuous RS485 monitoring, use Modbus RTU protocol — register map supplied with purchase.
What is the data logger memory capacity and how do I export measurements to Excel?
Data logger capacity: 2,000 measurement records. At 1-minute logging interval, this covers ~33 hours; at 5-minute interval, ~7 days of continuous logging. Export procedure: (1) Connect USB cable (type-C) to PC. (2) Meter appears as USB mass storage device. (3) Copy the DATA.CSV file to PC. (4) Open in Excel — columns are: Timestamp / Flow Rate (m³/h) / Velocity (m/s) / Forward Total (m³) / Reverse Total (m³) / Signal Quality. No software or drivers needed on Windows 10/11 or macOS. Optional PC software available for trend graphs and PDF reports.
What is the OEM MOQ and lead time for portable clamp-on flow meters from China?
MOQ 10 pcs for standard portable clamp-on meters (transit-time, DN15–DN6000 transducer set, 4-20mA + RS485 output, built-in data logger). Samples 1–2 pcs accepted. Standard lead time: 3–4 weeks.
