M18 Non-Flush Inductive Proximity Sensors 8–23 mm
Non-flush (unshielded) M18 inductive proximity sensors with nickel-plated brass housings. Four sensing distances, NPN, PNP, DC 2-wire, AC and AC/DC outputs, a 2 m cable or an M12 connector, and standard or short housings: 302 part numbers, each a fixed SEGMENsensor order code.

A SEGMENsensor M18 non-flush inductive proximity sensor is an 18 mm threaded metal-detection switch whose sensing face protrudes from the housing, so it reaches further than a flush model. The SGI-GP18U family has 302 part numbers with 8, 16, 20 or 23 mm rated sensing distance and nickel-plated brass housings.
- Rated sensing distances are 8 mm (80 models), 16 mm (79), 20 mm (72) and 23 mm (71).
- NPN and PNP 3-wire models run on 10–30, 5–36 or 10–55 V DC; DC 2-wire models on 10–60 V DC; AC models on 20–250 V AC; AC/DC models on 20–250 V AC/DC.
- Contacts are normally open, normally closed, or NO + NC complementary (64 NPN/PNP models).
- 156 models have a 2 m cable and 146 an M12 connector; 152 are short-housing (K) versions.
- Qualification samples of 1–5 pcs ship in 5–7 days; production is planned around your annual volume.

Selection
How to choose an M18 non-flush sensor
- Distance: pick 8, 16, 20 or 23 mm so the target passes well inside the rated distance, not at its limit.
- Output and supply: PNP or NPN to match the PLC input card; DC 2-wire to replace a mechanical switch in series with the load; AC or AC/DC where only mains-voltage control is available.
- Contact: normally open, normally closed, or NO + NC when one sensor must give both signals.
- Connection and housing: 2 m cable or M12 connector; short (K) housing where there is little depth behind the bracket.

Mounting
How do you mount a non-flush proximity sensor?
Mount it so the sensing face protrudes beyond the bracket, and keep metal and neighbouring sensors out of the zone around and in front of the face. IEC 60947-5-2 classifies proximity switches as embeddable (flush) or non-embeddable (non-flush); the minimum clearances for each part number are on its dimension drawing.
- Clamp the housing with the two lock nuts; do not hammer the housing.
- Check that no bracket edge, plate or second sensor is inside the metal-free zone.
- Power up and move the target into position to confirm the switching point before fixing the cable.
Wiring
How are PNP, NPN and 2-wire models connected?
A PNP 3-wire sensor switches L+ to the load, an NPN 3-wire sensor switches the load to L−, and a DC 2-wire sensor is wired in series with the load like a mechanical switch.
Wire colours and the M12 pin assignment are printed on the label and datasheet of each part number. M12 connectors with screw locking are specified in IEC 61076-2-101; proximity switch requirements, including connector annexes, in IEC 60947-5-2.

What is the difference between a flush and a non-flush M18 proximity sensor?
A flush (shielded) sensor can be mounted level with the surrounding metal. A non-flush (unshielded) sensor has a protruding sensing face and needs a metal-free zone around it, but reaches further. In SEGMENsensor data, M18 flush models are rated 5–15 mm and M18 non-flush models 8–23 mm.
Which sensing distances are available for M18 non-flush sensors?
Four rated sensing distances: 8 mm (80 models), 16 mm (79), 20 mm (72) and 23 mm (71). The distance is the three digits after the housing code in the part number, in 0.1 mm.
Which supply voltages are available?
NPN and PNP 3-wire models are available for 10–30 V DC, 5–36 V DC or 10–55 V DC. DC 2-wire models run on 10–60 V DC, AC 2-wire models on 20–250 V AC, and AC/DC models on 20–250 V AC/DC.
Should I choose a cable or an M12 connector?
Choose the 2 m cable (156 models) for a fixed installation wired directly into a junction box. Choose the M12 connector (146 models) when the sensor must be replaced quickly without rewiring, using a separate M12 cordset.
What is the short-housing (K) version?
Part numbers with -K have a shorter housing for installations with limited depth behind the mounting bracket. 152 of the 302 models are short-housing versions; the housing length of each part number is on its dimension drawing.
